Fred Gilleland Sr. 83, of Athens, Georgia, passed away Friday morning, April 20, 2018, at the Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center.
Born January 3, 1935, in Birmingham, Alabama, he was the son of the late Fred Elbert and Irene Lucy Bennett Christopher Gilleland. He was the husband of the late Sandra Jean Wiley Gilleland; father of the late Polly Gilleland; grandfather of the late Stephen Gilleland; and brother of the late Ilo Savage, Ralph Gilleland, and Ray Gilleland; step-son of the late Claude Christopher. He was a former resident of Lavonia, GA, retired from Lakewood General Motors, and served in the U S Navy. He was a member of Old Pathway Baptist Church, Bowersville, GA.
Survivors include two sons and daughter-in-law, Fred Gilleland Jr, Athens, GA, Mike and Linda Gilleand, Carnesville, and Ilo Gilleland, of Athens, GA; thirteen grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; and a sister, Betty Jo Duncan, Palm Harbor, Florida.
Services will be Monday at 2pm at Old Pathway Baptist Church with Rev. Michael Smith and Rev. Billy Swift. Interment with Naval Honors will be in the New Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery.
The body is at the Ginn Funeral Home. The families are at their homes. They will receive friends from 2 until 5pm Sunday afternoon at the funeral home. Condolences may be left at ginnfuneralhome.com.
