John William Thurmond, 73, of Simpsonville, SC , died Friday, June 23, 2017, after an extended illness, at the McCall Hospice House in Simpsonville, SC. The son of the late Raymond “Ray” LaFayette Thurmond and Gertrude “Gert” Poole Thurmond, he was born August 26, 1943, in Carnesville, GA. John retired from the Stephens County School System in Toccoa, GA and was an Elder of the Toccoa Christian Church.
Survivors include his wife, Janice Taylor Thurmond of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Chris and Marcy Moore; three grandchildren, Abby Moore, Nick Moore, and Olivia Moore; two goddaughters, Josy Hill and Jacy Hill; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Rachel Goolsby, Ellen Thurmond and Jean Daughtry.
Preceded in death were sisters; the late Bonnie Goolsby, the late Mary Thurmond, the late Martha Thurmond, and brother, the late Douglas Thurmond.
Visitation for Mr. Thurmond will be held on Sunday, June 25, 2017, from 6:00 pm-9:00 pm at Ginn Funeral Home, 90 Church Street, Carnesville, GA. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday, June 26, 2017, at Toccoa Christian Church. The minister, Gary Phillips, will officiate. Interment will be in Stephens Memorial Garden.
Pallbearers will be Chris Moore, Nick Moore, Jeff Hill, Jason Kidd, Eric Goolsby, Rod Goolsby, Curtis Weeks, Corey Weeks, and Daniel Thurmond.
