Virlyn Franklin Chitwood, 86, of the New Franklin community, passed away peacefully at home the morning of June 6

th

, 2017.

Born March 14, 1931 in Stephens County, Georgia, he was the son of the late Fort and Neatie Norton Chitwood.  The Chitwoods spent their early days in Banks County near Currahee Mountain before moving to Franklin County in 1944.  Virlyn was a 1949 graduate of Lavonia High.  He retired from Westinghouse/ABB after 25 years of service.  In 1979 he opened Chitwood Peach Orchard.  He loved trips to the beach, reading, golfing, and the rewards of hard work.  All who knew him will remember his art of conversation and love of nature.  He was a longtime member of New Franklin Christian Church where he served as a board member, song leader, and Sunday School teacher.

He was preceded in death by siblings, Steve Chitwood, Cliff, Chitwood, Francine McDonald, and Charles Chitwood.  Survivors include Emily Callicutt Chitwood, his wife of 66 years; two sons and daughters-in-law Scott and Rosie Chitwood, Canon, and Reed and Shirley Chitwood, Lawrenceville; Four grandsons Adam Chitwood, Curtis and Sara Chitwood, Derek and Kari Chitwood, and Jason and Jennifer Chitwood.  Great grandchildren Emily Chitwood and Ellison Chitwood; sisters Joyce Hill, Clarkesville, Dorothy Caudell, Atlanta, James Chitwood, Canon, and Kenneth Chitwood, Lavonia.

Funeral services will be Thursday afternoon at 2 pm at the New Franklin Christian Church with Carl Beckham and Rev. Chris Chitwood officiating.  Interment will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6 until 8 pm at Ginn Funeral Home.  In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to New Franklin Christian Church cemetery fund.  4244 New Franklin Church Road, Canon, Georgia 30520
