Ernest Melvin "Mel" Richards, 80, of the Sandy Cross Community, passed away Saturday morning, January 13, at the St. Mary's Hospital, Athens, Georgia.

Born September 7, 1937, he was the son of the late Ernest Burrow and Laura Muzette Bass Richards.  He was a veteran of the United States Air Force and had an associate degree from North Georgia College.  He was a Mason and Shriner. He was a retired operations manager for  Action Expediting Trucking Co.  He was a member of the Midway United Methodist  Church, Midway Georgia.

Survivors include his wife, JoAnn Wilson Richards; son and daughter-in-law, Rich and Renee Richards, Carnesville; three daughters and sons-in-law, Lisa and Mike Bryant, Carnesville, Lori Hunt, Royston, and Leslye and Frank Sinopoli, Cleveland, Georgia: eleven grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren.

Memorial Services with military honors will be 1pm Thursday at the Allens United Methodist Church with Rev. Paul Garner and Rev. Johnny Ray.  The families are at their respective homes and will receive friends from 6 until 8 Wednesday evening at the funeral home.
